The Prentice Cup

Some good tennis was played yesterday on the grass at the club. It was Longwood's turn to host the Prentice Cup. Longwoods' own Connor H and Matt P were in the line up representing Harvard.  Many people came down to watch the event, which was to a big part organized by Jon T and Mark W.

Mark Williamson provided an excellent briefing on what the Prentice Cup is:

"The Prentice Cup, a lawn tennis match played between teams from Harvard-Yale and Oxford –Cambridge started in 1921. At that time, it represented the first international intercollegiate tennis event ever held and it’s the oldest truly amateur tennis competition played on an international scale. The Prentice Cup was named for Bernon Prentice who donated the Cup in 1925.
The match is a bi-annual event played alternately in Great Britain and the US. The venue for the match in Great Britain is the All England Club and in the US is the Seabright Lawn Tennis and Cricket Club in Rumson, New Jersey. Traditionally, the visiting team has travelled in the host country before and after the match, playing a number of other events at clubs with grass courts. Longwood has been a regular and highly popular stop on the tour.
The Oxford-Cambridge team comprises three players from each of the Universities. At Longwood, they will be facing a strong team comprised primarily of Harvard and Yale alums."

Crickets Tennis

The Crickets occupy the bottom room on the pool side of the building. Kim and her staff train all the little crickets how to get ready for tennis and swimming. It's about changing outfits, finding the tennis sock, get out of a wet bathing suit, and keep track of the racket. The Crickets is also about developing motor skills on the tennis court by tossing balls, catching balls, rolling a tennis ball, hitting a tennis ball, and getting a water break. Also, ball pick up is an important activity to practice at this age, as coaches later in life will demand that players pick up the balls on the court.

In the pictures below, Coach Maisie shared her water break skills and tennis skills with some of the Crickets.

Get your motor running

Cardio Tennis is a great way to get your motor running and to improve your tennis at the same time. It's a pure exercise clinic, and no room for doubles play at the end. Just running down balls and hit FHs and BHs repeatedly across the court. This Wednesday morning group was tiny, but they worked hard. If you haven't tried a Cardio Tennis session yet, sign up for Saturday 11-12 or Wednesday 9-10. Get your motor running!

Monday Night Team Tennis Standings as of July 17

Team Larry: 505*                                            Team Magnus:  533*

*The score from 7/9 is missing... I am trying to locate the score sheet. It got lost in the bar when they figured out who should be charged for the drinks... Larry won that night, so with that score added to the total above, Larry will be in the lead.

Summer in the city

If you haven't noticed it, it is summer in the city of Boston. On the courts at Longwood, fathers and their sons from all over the country are competing for the 2012 Father/Son Grass Court Gold Ball. Good tennis was played all day Monday, also into the evening when the Monday Night Team Tennis took over the courts. We had 9 courts going. KC, Kathy, Jacqueline, Steve, and Jeff played for the first time this year, and were quite happy afterwards when they found out that they were all (except Jacqueline) on the winning team and got a free drink. But Miss J was still happy and enjoyed playing in the event.

Larry was busy running the Father/Son tournametn, so I was able to draft players very independently. As a veteran MNTT player, Joe McNay was signed early to my team. To even the strengths of the teams out, another heavy weight player, Bernhard Radtke, was quickly assigned to Larry's team. A fan favourite, Bob Dickie, made a comeback, having not played in a few weeks. As a protege' of Larrys, he of course had to be assigned to Larrys' team. Other regulars were Maria, Andrea, Debbie, Patge, Wallace, Dan, Cindy, Lenny, Peter, Bob, Ken, Bruce, Susan, Paul, JVH, and Lou.

The first round was key to the victory. And victory was sweet. After three weeks of coming in second, my team played very well and finally won again. My team was up 44-28 after the first round of doubles, and won 42 games in the 2nd round against Team Larry's 30 games. In the end, my team won 126-90. For the 3rd round, one of my players had to leave, so I filled in for him. Together with Jeff Z I clinched the victory with an impressive 8-0 win over [first name, last name] and [first name, last name]. (Names erased upon request by the losing team.)

It was a great night for tennis and everyone had fun playing and socializing afterwards. Next week will be tougher when Larry is around for some hands-on coaching again.

Final score MNTT # 5:    Team Larry  90                                        Team Magnus 126

Camp Wolf now accepting donations

Another excellent day for Monday night team tennis. This was the 4th MNTT, and at this point Larry is winning. He has won 3 of the 4, or 75%. Pick your poison. We had 14 courts and 56 players participating. One of the possitives this night was the fact that there was actually some food left for me afterwards on the poarch. Typically it's all gone by the time me and Larry have done the math and counted up the 3 rounds. Tony brought out some good stuff, and I especially enjoyed those crackers with cheese and jam. I had 5!

Two other possitives were round 1 and round 2. My team performed very well, going into the lead after the first round and expanded the lead 108 to 94 after round 2. I was sitting pretty watching the matches play out the way I had planned it. But then something happened in the last round. Team Larry surprisingly caught up and actually passed my team! I know exactly what he did, he put in Betsy E in a key match, and she and her partner scored a 7-1 victory on court 12. I have to say, a genius move. A close match on the CH court required my hands on coaching, and I had to walk out and talk to my players. We decided to return the other teams serves XC and then our net player would poach. Well... let me put it this way: it didn't go as planned. My team ended up winning 3 games against the other teams' 5 games.

At the end of the day I felt that if we could have kept the pace up, the Nahirny's could have won a free drink each instead of having to pay for 4 drinks. I feel that Larry was handed some donations in Round 3. And he accepted them.

Final score: Team Larry                                                                   Team Magnus

Monday Night Team Tennis #3

Around 4 PM today Paul asked me how many courts I expected for Monday Night Team Tennis. Thinking that it is the 4th of July week, and that many people go away, I said my guess is 5 to 6 courts. 40 players showed up and we had 10 courts of tennis! Curt, Vicki, Walter, Pam, David, and Carol played in their first MNTT. Welcome!

I was wondering whether Larry would call in from South Dartmouth to check on his team. He and Linda are on a well deserved family reunion break. There were no calls. Hmmm.... he must be communicating with his team somehow. Maybe he just sent some possitive vibes from the So. Dartmouth beaches.

The first round was tight. Larry's team won 33 games vs. Magnus/ 24 games. Going in to Round 2 I said to myself: "I need to stir things up here". So I put the Taffs together, and they got the job done. However, Round 2 ended up in Larry's favor despite the Taffs. For the 3rd round I got desperate, so I had to play my best card: McNay/ Rappaport. They already played together in Round 1, but in this situation I couldn't take any chances. My coaching paid off and McNay/Rappaport won their match, Larry's team however again showed who was the stronger team tonight, and ended up winning also the 3rd round. There must have been some hidden coaching going on after all. I will find out!

Final score: Larry 131                            Magnus 101

Excellent conditions for MNTT

Round 2 Order of Play

A Doubles

If you read the title of this post as "a doubles", you're reading it the worng way. It is supposed to be "A Doubles", and it refers to the Club Championships Men's A Doubles, Women's A Doubles, and Mixed A Doubles. All these 3 divisions were played up to the finals this passed weekend. Two matches on the Friday and one on the Saturday were played on clay, all other matches on grass.
I was lucky to capture the best point in this Men's A doubles match on video. Study the footwork of the receivers partner and tell me how good it is on a scale from 1 to 10 (10 being the best)

It was a beautiful day on Saturday up on the terrace. The Grounds did a fabulous job getting the courts ready after some heavy rain Friday morning. I noticed very early Saturday morning that Grounds Man elite Neil drove the tractor with the 100 year old roller behind it over the courts to firm them up and improve the playing experience for the competitors. Neil was wearing his orange baseball hat, a slight mismatch with the color of the tractor. Tennis Director Wolf brought up water and towels for the players as well as balls and most importantly: the Draws. You have got to know who you are playing, and when.

Tournament Director with The Draws
There were many hard fought matches, and some players ended up playing more than they could chew. Creative stalling techniques to conserve energy between matches and after split sets were indeed observed.

One of the more entertaining matches that I watched was KofolKofol vs. O'SullivanChen. Team O'Chen lost the first set and was up 4-3 in the second when DKofol served a long game that could have gone either way. After several deuces she held to 4-4. Team Kofol then broke, and TKofol served out the match.

As you know, all finals are played on the Championship weekend in September. The Doubles Finals will be played as follow:

Men's A Doubles: Gregor/Porter vs. Ament/Meringoff

Women's A Doubles: Driscoll/O'Sullivan vs. Judge/Lane

Mixed A Doubles: L. Ford/Porter vs. Judge/B. Power

It was hard to take one picture of all the courts. This is a poor attempt...

Penn's grandfather

One of the most popular tennis balls is the Penn ball. At LCC the Wilson ball is the most popular, and in my opinion, the better ball to play with. Anyhow, I came across a can of Penn's grandfather - the Pennsylvania ball. The color scheme of the can is the same as the Penn ball, and it contained 2 white balls. My guess is that at one point someone in the administrative office said "Pennsylvania is too long. Let's just call it Penn.".

Cardio Tennis

Cardio tennis is a much better work out than playing singles or doubles for an hour. Especially if you go to Aarons' Saturday Cardio Tennis at 11:00. This Saturday 8 participants worked on their stamina and probably lost 300 calories each. Cardio is great for everyone. You can go at your own pace, and feel free to sit out for a little bit if you need to. Aaron makies sure the music pumps you up (sorry, no ABBA music), and he will also challenge you to run down every ball. Sign up by calling the Pro Shop. Remember to bring you water bottle, and take my advise to wear a headband or a hat to absorbe your sweat!

Monday Night Team Tennis # 2

OK, so my team lost tonight... A tough one to swallow. Coach Larry mobilized his players well, and he also drafted very well. It was a bigger crew than last week, 64 players came out to play and we played on courts 1 - 14.

The first round was very even, 57 to 53 in favour of Larry. In the second round, his team expanded the lead by winning 65 games against Magnus' 55 games. In this round, three matches ended up 4-4, and nine matches 5-3 or 3-5. These scores indicate that me and Larry did good job making up the matches. It was three 6-2 wins by Larry's team that made a difference. Magnus' team won the 3rd round 61-59. Both teams had a 7-1 win in this round (maybe a less good match up by us...).

We were one person short for the last round, so I played in. I actually played for Larrys' team, b/c it was his team that was missing a player. Going full steam, I ended up winning 5-3, which in hindsight was a bad move by me. I should just have tanked the match so my team would have won the event. But, Monday Night Team Tennis is about competing, trying hard, and do your best, so once I warmed up a little I was able to put a few by our opponents.

Unfortunately for me, the hors d'oeuvres were gone by the time that I got up on the porch. One of my favorite members, but a non-participant in the event, was instead chewing along happily on the food... I ended up with one of Tony's stir fry instead, which was delish... But where was the Toast Skagen?

See you next Monday!

Final Score: Larry: 181              Magnus:  169

Womens' Member Guest

The 2012 Women's Member Guest started out under a blue sky on Saturday, but after lunch a cold wind moved in. Conveniently they players could put on their Longwood warm up jackets which was this years gift to the players.

The players were divided into 2 division, creatively named the "Billie Jean Moffitt" and the "Billie Jean King" divisions. As you know, Billie Jean King's maiden name was Moffitt. In each division there were 2 flights of 6 teams.

Grounds- and Tennis Directors planning the day
After a morning session of round robins, the number 1 and 2 teams of each flight moved into a Championship Playoff. Number 3 and 4 from each flight played for the 3rd and 4th position. The remaining teams played for position 5 and 6.

In the playoffs after lunch, Allison Taff and her guest Maggie Butorac ended up winning the Billie Jean Moffit Championship, 8-4 against Molly Hahn and her guest Nancy Grimes. In the Billie Jean King division, Cynthia Dareshori and her guest Cheryl Emery won against Nancy Hughes and her guest Carol Linde for the Championship.

Lunch was privided by our own Tony B. I had some left overs in the kitchen as the afternoon play off started. I couldn't find the Toast Skagen, maybe next weekend for the Men's Member Guest.

Look at me!

Looks like more action on the 2nd row

Maybe not... here's some action

Monday Night Team Tennis Opening Night 2012

Exactly 40 players came out to play Monday Night Team Tennis (MNTT) on a beautiful Monday night. For those of you who are new to the club, the MNTT is a competitive event between Larry and Magnus, who draft players to their respective team. Once the rosters are determined, about 6:05 PM, the battle begins. We play 3 rounds of tennis: doubles, mixed doubles, doubles. The format is no add scoring, and a total of 8 games. A reason why many members are so enthusiastic about Monday night is that there is no sign up in advance, just show up and play. Sign up is at the club outside of the Pro Shop, starting around 5:30. The idea is that the matches starts as close to 6:00 as possible. If you are arriving at the club at 6:15 the matches are already in progress.

On this first MNTT of the year, it turned out that the first round was key to victory. Coach Magnus' team came out to a jump start and took a comanding 20 points lead, and from there didn't look back. Although the round of Mixed Doubles was dead even, 40-40 points, Magnus's team rolled on to win the third round 45-35, and was declared winners of the event.

The winning team gets to enjoy a free drink afterwards on behalf of the runner ups. The players on the losing team are charged for 2 drinks: 1 for themselves, and one for an opponent. Wine and beer is charged a minimal price equal to a soda. Tony also provides some delicious finger food afterwards. If you haven't participated in the MNTT yet, come down next Monday and play!

Final Score: Team Larry 103, Team Magnus 137

Run for your life!

16 members showed up this morning for a Cardio Tennis workout, a record number. Aaron and Hanna kept everyone buys on the two teaching courts, forcing Director Wolf to move up to the Rt. 9 courts for his lesson.

Cardio Tennis is pure workout. If you want to work on your quickness by running down balls left and right, this is for you. If you prefer to do a few drills and play doubles at the end, Cardio is not for you. If you want to get on the list for the next Cardio Tennis, call the Pro Shop.

Women's Saturday Clinic

For those women who are able to play during the day, we have been offering many different women's clinics over the years. This season we are introducing a Saturday afternoon clinic for the players on or close to the 4.0 rating.

Last Saturday Coach Larry ran 4 women through different drills on one of the teaching courts. Instruction included court positioning for doubles as well as stroke production (volleys, groundstrokes, down the line, cross court, etc.).

Captains dilemma

Being a team captain for a Spring League team can be easy when everything is moving along smoothly. Especially if nobody on the team is injured and the weather forecast says sun and blue sky. Everyone just shows up and plays. No big deal. But then there is the Longwood Green team that has to play TCC this week, which typically is our toughest opponent every spring. Combined with a weather forecast that predicts rain for the next 3 days, it is a tough job for Captain Liz to set the line up. Some of todays practice time was spent figuring out who should play together. "Maybe X could play with Y, but X plays better with Z, so mabye X should play with Z, and I could play with Y". As we are playing at TCC, we know that the surface will be clay indoors. As for our line up, only the Captain knows what the final line up will look like. And you can be sure that we will not announce it on this blog prior to the game, as you don't know where the enemy will gather information about our team.

Great practice today with the Green team. Lots of volleys and groundstrokes. On my station the net players isolated a baseline player on either the deuce or the add side. The baseline player at the same time had to hit low balls, trying not to give the net players easy high balls. Lobs were banned in this drill.
The team goofing around at the water cooler.
What do you think? Should X play with Z?

Mens Drill Clinic

Saturday was a busy day with the new member reception, Wilson demo day, and the Men's Drill Clinic. Seven guys showed up to the first of the weekly Drill Clinics. We had a late cancellation, otherwise it would have been a full house of 8 players.

Coach Wolf and Nicklasson ran the players through some volley drills, approach drills, and court positioning drills, until the group warmed up serves and finished with some doubles.

This Men's Drill Clinic targets players in the 3.5 - 4.0 range. The time is 1:30-3:00 on Saturdays. Weekly sign up, by calling the pro shop. The ratio is 4:1, so no more than 4 players on each court. Call the pro shop now to sign up for next week!

Happy, tired men and Coaches

New Member RR and Wilson Demo Day

The club house was filled this morning with new and old members. It was the new member reception and round robin. Buks, Larry, Fred, and Larry again shared information about the club and upcoming events this summer. Then the fun started when everyone went on the courts for some tennis. Paul did a good job getting everyone involved on a limited number of available courts. New member Pablo was out there playing non stop from 10:45 to 4:15 when I left the club. He's probably still playing as you read this. Snacks had been advertised, but I didn't see any. Tony?? But maybe snacks were served when I had my lesson at 12 noon. Below some pictures from the RR. Although not sunny, the conditions were excellent, and great tennis was played by all.

Div. 1 A Pink Longwood Green Homegame

Testing, testing... OK! Dear readers, once again we are blogging live from the Longwood Cricket Club. In the blogger booth is Magnus. It's the Longwood Green team that is playing against Lincoln. The LCC 1 A Pink team is captained by Liz O'Connell. The weather is a little iffy here at Chestnut Hill. We had some rain this morning but now it's just misty. It actually just stopped raining. The court is a little damp and the balls are a little heavier. The grounds did a good job getting the courts ready for this battle.

The teams are spinning a racket and it seems as if Jean and Katrina on the Longwood team won the toss. Yes, they did win the toss and they will start out serving. Great! The Longwood team is hitting from left to right across your computer screen.

Katrina is serving first. She bounces the ball, takes aim, and there she fires the first serve to the wide corner. Return goes cross court and Katrina has moved in and volleys back cross court to the Lincoln player Chance. The ball comes back to Katrina and it's a low volley, she just puts it back deep cross court. Good point here the first point in the match. Lincoln hits another cross court and Katrina puts her backhand volley in the middle between the two players. 15 - 0. Nice point.

From this first point I think we can see that the Longwood team is going to play agressively and take the net. Here comes the next point. Katrina bounces the ball. She's still bouncing it. Must be some odd service routine she learned from Dave. Not sure. Anyway, here comes the serve. It's going to the T, the inside return goes back to the middle and Jean is movig for it. Can she get it? Yes! She gets to the ball and the ball just dies on the other side of the net. The soft court took away the bounce. 30 - 0.

Next serve. She's bouncing the ball again.... A good serve that goes wide to the T. She hasn't missed a first serve yet. The return goes back cross court in front of Katrina, and she pops it up high. Here comes Laura from Lincoln and she hits a high volley down the line for a winner. Good point. 30 - 15.

Strategy meeting

A good serve
Now serving to the add side. Chance returns down the line. It's a good solid return but Jean is watching the alley and she volleys the ball back to the Lincoln player. Another bomb from the baseline, Chance hits to the middle. Katrina closes in very well and she volleys back cross court. Watch out for the lob now ladies. And there it is! The Lincoln player lobs the ball - didn't I just say that? - and Jean is going back for the over head. A lefty, Jean should be in a good position to put away the over head, and she does. 40 - 15.

We are up two game points and it looks as if we will take a lead here in the first set. Katrina is ready to serve. I guess not. Jean is walking back to Katrina, they have a little talk here. Who knows. Maybe they want to do a planned poach or play an Australian formation. Jean is moving back to her ready position. I don't see anything different here, ladies and gentlemen. Not sure what they were talking about. Anyway, here comes the serve. The return goes into the net. A soft return, and Longwood closes out this first game. 1 - 0.

You can find the score from todays matches at the Spring League Website.

The Ball Shed

Ever wondered where the tennis staff keeps all the tennis balls? It's not a secret that all the balls are kept in the ball shed behind the two teaching courts. At the beginning of the season it is very clean and neat inside the ball shed. Over time it tends to become more dirty and messy. The ball carts bring in some clay stuck to the wheels, and if the balls are wet the clay sticks to the balls and then falls to the floor when the balls dry over night. All the people running in and out of the shed also bring in lots of clay.

Hoppers and pick up tubes are now neatly stacked on the shelves and the floor, but tend to be spread around the shed as we go deeper into the summer.

Feel free to use the balls but please return them, and please help the tennis staff to keep the shed clean and organized.

Behind this covered up door is the Ball Shed

Balls are sorted by color - red, orange, green, and yellow

Teaching tools like ball machines, yellow lines, short rackets, ladders, and more is stored here as well. Feel free to use these tools, but please return them to their place when you are done. The practice balls are stored here in cases. The tennis staff changes the practice balls in the ball carts frequently. The balls in the cases should not be used for personal play. Cans of balls are to be purchased in the Pro Shop.

Unconfirmed rumours say that there is a ghost in the shed that you can see at midnight on the first Friday each month. If you dare, let's meet here at 11:59 PM on Friday, May 4th. Bring your flash light and a snack (Tony is long gone).

Div. 1 A Pink Homegame

Testing... Testing... OK! Hello readers! We are live at Longwood Cricket  Club for the Div. 1 A Pink home game against Wellesley. Blogging court side is Magnus. On the first court, Cecilia and Sarah are serving from left to right across your screen.

Sarah tosses the ball, and there is the serve. It goes to the wide corner. Wellesley slugger Kellog is returning cross court, Sarah is hitting a cross court back, and she is coming in to net. Now both LCC players are at net and there is the next shot from Wellesly. It goes to Cecilia who hits a pressure volley right at the poor Wellesley woman Hope, who hits the ball into the net! 15-0.

Here is the next serve. Sarah is serving to the T, and Wellesly is hitting a cross court return, but Cecilia is poaching for a winner. Nice poach! Seems as if those poaching drills with coach Larry is paying off. 30-0.

Serving to the deuce side again. Fault. 2nd serve coming. The Wellesley receiver is creeping in closer to the service line for the return. Here comes the serve, and the return goes cross court back to Sarah. The Wellesley player is moving in behind the return, and Sarah is hitting a dipper right in front of Kellog from Wellesly, who pops up the ball. Cecilia is closing in for the high ball and she puts it away right between the two opponents. A fantastic dipper from Sarah and a rocket volley. 40-0.

Three game points. This looks good. Sarah has been serving very well. She looks very confident today, and so does Cecilia. Here come the serve. It is going to the wide corner, the the backhand. Sarah is coming in behind the serve and she volleys the return back cross court. Both Longwood player are up at net again, taking the net away from the other team. Sarah's volley is going deep to the corner, the Wellesley player is reaching for the ball and she hits a high lob. Sarah and Cecilia are moving back and it is Cecilia who hits the over head. The ball goes to the center of the court, just inside the baseline. The Wellesley team is lifting up the ball again, but it's a short lob. Sarah moves in and she hits a great angled backhand volley to close out the game to love. Great tennis here at Longwood on court 1!

Ready for Spring League Take Off

Yesterday was the last spring league team practice before the league kicks off on Tuesday. Our Div. 3 C Green team, captained by Susan Clancy, plays at Brookline. LCC Div. 3 B White, captained by Lisa Cummings, takes on the Windsor Club on the Longwood courts. I will try to blog live from the first home game!

Here is a link to the Spring League website where you can find the schedule and the scores.

LCC Div. 3 C Green with Coach Wolf
All the Coaches are feeling confident with the teams and are looking forward to starting the season again. Quick reminder to all players: The warm-up time is limited to 15 minutes, including serves. Keep in mind that the purpose of the warm-up is not to "work on your game", but to warm up your strokes and get your footwork going.

Please someone remind Tony to cook up some good food for Tuesdays home game!

1st Spring League Practice!

Today two teams practiced to prepare for the first spring league battle next week. The first team only saw 2 players, but it was a full house on the second practice of the day with 15 players practicing. With Larry, Tim, and myself as Coaches on duty, the players went through volley drills, approach shot drills, and point play. Effort level was high among players and coaches.
All set up and we are ready to go

Action on courts 5 - 8
Two wo new members who came out to practice with their new team mates, Liz and Cecilia. Welcome to LCC Spring League. Just so you know, it's not always as nice practicing outside in April as it was today. Today was a great day, with a blue sky and almost no wind. The courts were in good shape too. This early in the season the clay courts are always a little on the softer side as they haven't been played much on yet. The more they are played on, the harder they will become.
Volley drill
Next week is the real deal with our first round of matches. As he has in the past, I expect Tony will serve up a great lunch for the home teams and their opponents. Maybe the Coaches can have some left overs?
